What you need to avoid is bad modifiers like cold enchanted because it is risky and a great waste of time. If they corner you with your merc in that position it becomes easier to fight them but if the merc dies anyway - as it is likely to do - just let it die. If you have a staff with teleport as you second weapon and feel confident to use it while fighting ancients you might keep teleporting yourself and your merc until Talic and Korlic chase you there.

With a melee build the easiest way to defeat the Ancients is to place yourself at the top of the stairs leading to the Worldstone Keep and fight it out from that corner. Hell ancients are too strong and the only way for your merc to survive is if all of the ancients focus on you. There is very small chance your merc will survive Hell ancients and you have to do all the fighting unlike on lower difficulties.
